Unwavering support for Ukraine: G7 leaders adopt joint communiqué

After their meeting in Hiroshima, the leaders of the G7 countries issued a statement expressing their unwavering support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.

They also developed a strategy to counter threats such as Russia's use of energy as a means of influence.

- "We will jointly focus on ensuring that attempts to abuse economic dependence by refusing to allow G7 members and our partners, in particular weak economies, to comply and meet demands fail and face consequences," the document says.

It also states that, based on recent cases of manipulation of energy and other economic dependencies, we will stand firmly against such a position.

In particular, in the joint communiqué, the G7 leaders reaffirmed the following key points:

  • provide support to Ukraine for as long as necessary due to Russia's illegal military aggression;
  • to increase actions in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation in order to achieve the ultimate goal of a world without nuclear weapons and without threat to all;
  • promote the transition to clean energy economies of the future through cooperation within the G7 and beyond.

The communiqué mentions a separate statement by G7 leaders on Ukraine adopted on Friday, where they pledge to "strengthen diplomatic, financial, humanitarian and military support for Ukraine, raise the cost to Russia and those who support its military actions, and continue to fight against the negative effects of war on the world, especially on the most vulnerable."

The G7 summit continues in Japan until May 21. Participants are discussing ways to stabilize the global economy, in particular as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and Russian aggression against Ukraine.
