Borrell proposes to significantly increase the EU fund that helps Ukraine with weapons

Joseph Borrell, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has proposed an increase in the European Peace Fund, which supports military assistance to Ukraine, by an additional 3.5 billion euros.

This was reported by sources in the EU to the Reuters agency on Wednesday.

An anonymous senior EU official said that Borrell had decided to request an increase in the funding of the fund, as its current resources are being depleted, and the EU wants to ensure that there are enough resources for military assistance to other countries, including Ukraine.

"We need to replenish it (the fund). The essence of the European Peace Fund... is universal. It was not conceived for Ukraine. It was designed for any conflict that the European Union may face," the source added.

The European Peace Fund is an off-budget tool, the total volume of which currently stands at almost eight billion euros. From it, EU member states are compensated for part of the military costs they transfer to Ukraine. In total, about 4.6 billion euros have been spent from the fund on military assistance to Ukraine.

At the same time, thanks to the European Peace Fund, the EU also supports many other countries, such as Mozambique, Georgia, Moldova, Mali, Somalia, Niger, Jordan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lebanon, and Mauritania.
