Ukraine's Foreign Ministry urges not to link detainee for possible assassination attempt on Trump to Ukraine

Ukraine’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs has called on the international community to refrain from looking for links between American Ryan Routh, who was detained for a possible assassination attempt on Donald Trump last week, and Ukraine.

Details: Tykhyi stressed that Ukraine condemns all forms of political violence, recalling the statement of Volodymyr Zelenskyy after Routh's detention.

"This suspect has no ties to Ukrainian government institutions and has never fought for Ukraine as part of the International Legion or other units of Ukraine's Defence Forces," he added.

Tykhyi noted that Routh had previously "publicly supported Ukraine", but that there are "hundreds of millions of people in the United States who support Ukraine - and clearly they are diverse group individuals".

"We urge everyone to refrain from artificially linking the suspect's actions to Ukraine. We see this in the media, on Twitter and other places," the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

Tykhyi also confirmed that Ukraine was ready to assist in the investigation of the incident if requested by the US, later clarifying that he was not aware of any such requests from Washington.

On 15 September, Donald Trump's campaign reported a shooting near his golf club in Florida. Later, it became known that a man who was carrying a gun and hiding near the golf club, where Trump was at the time, had been detained.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the suspect in the case of the alleged attempt on Trump's life as 58-year-old Ryan Routh, who had been arrested eight times and actively supported Ukraine.
