Crimean Tatar woman detained by Russia for alleged espionage to be judged in Moscow

Crimean Tatar, Ukrainian citizen Leniie Umerova, whom Russia accuses of espionage, has written a letter saying that her court hearing will take place in Moscow in autumn.

Quote: "They replaced the investigator in my case and recently took me to meet him. It was nothing important, but he said that the main trial would approximately take place in autumn.

Also, [he said] that I would be prosecuted in Moscow, not in the Caucasus, but I am not 100% sure about this."

Background:

  • On 4 December 2022, Russian security forces detained 25-year-old Crimean Tatar woman Leniie Umerova after crossing the Georgian-Russian border when she tried to return to temporarily occupied Crimea to care for her father with cancer. She was accused of allegedly violating the rules of the restricted zone.
  • The Lefortovo court in Moscow arrested Umerova on charges of espionage.
