Creation of an international coalition to purchase fighter jets for Ukraine

At a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte during the Council of Europe summit in Iceland, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak agreed to work together to form an international coalition to purchase combat aircraft for Ukraine.

This was reported by the Downing Street press service representing the UK government.

"The two prime ministers agreed to work together to create an international coalition to strengthen Ukraine's air combat capabilities, including providing support from pilot training to the purchase of F-16 fighters," the statement said.

The statement also emphasized that the British Prime Minister expressed confidence that Ukraine has a legitimate right to NATO membership, and the leaders reaffirmed the importance of long-term support from allies to ensure Ukraine's security to deter further aggression.

The British prime minister's office also reported that during the summit, Sunak also met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The prime minister informed Ursula von der Leyen about President Zelenskyy's recent visit to the UK. They agreed on the importance of continuing to support Ukraine during this critical period, including the application of sanctions against Russia. "It was agreed that the G7 summit in Japan this week will be a platform to demonstrate unity and international support for Ukraine," said the Downing Street official.

The G7 meeting is scheduled for May 19-21 in Hiroshima, Japan.
