Bloomberg calls fighting in Kursk region the first invasion of Russia since World War II

Bloomberg has called the Ukrainian breakthrough of the Russian border in the Kursk region the first time since World War II that the army of another country has invaded Russia.

Details: According to the newspaper, up to a thousand Ukrainian soldiers have entered the Kursk region. This is the first time since World War II that troops of another country have entered Russia.

Bloomberg also reports that Putin summoned his subordinates to explain himself the day before. And Russian "military commanders" accused the officials of incompetence.

The newspaper also suggests that this situation is likely to reinforce Kyiv's argument that American and European allies should not be afraid of the Kremlin's threats of escalation, but instead should allow Ukraine to fight in any way to speed up the end of the war.

Bloomberg believes that this episode showed the fragility of the defense of the Russian border, undermined the Kremlin's image of Putin as a defender of ordinary Russians and raised Ukrainian morale.

Background:

  • On August 6, Russians reported that Ukraine was trying to break through into the Kursk region. On August 7, Russian propagandists and so-called "military commanders" claimed that Ukrainian forces had gained a foothold in the border area. And Russian President Vladimir Putin called the situation a "provocation".
  • On the second day after the border breakthrough, a state of emergency was introduced in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation.
  • Experts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), having analyzed the collected data, confirm the advance of Ukrainian troops up to 10 kilometers deep into the Russian Kursk region.
  • President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said amid reports of hostilities in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation that Russia should also feel the war.
