Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has congratulated Péter Magyar, leader of the until-now opposition Tisza party, on taking office as prime minister of Hungary. Zelenskyy called it symbolic that the inauguration took place on Europe Day.

"Ukraine is ready to deepen cooperation with Hungary and build strong relations between our countries based on good neighborliness and respect for our people. Together, we can bring greater strength to our nations and make all of Europe stronger. I wish you success and good results in office!" Zelenskyy wrote.

Background

On 9 May, Hungary's new government, led by Péter Magyar, was sworn in and officially began its work. Earlier, the parliament's inaugural session elected a new Speaker, whose first decisions included returning the European Union flag to the parliament building.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also published a message of congratulations to Magyar.
