Ukraine will not reject security agreements as they are not an alternative to NATO membership, Foreign Ministry says

Ukraine's statement that full NATO membership is the only acceptable format for security guarantees does not contradict the existing security agreements between Ukraine and its partner states.

Source: European Pravda, citing Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on the sidelines of the NATO ministerial meeting on 4 December

Quote from Sybiha: "This is not an alternative. It is a pathway to membership – both a tool and a mechanism to strengthen support for Ukraine now and on our path to NATO."

Details: The minister believes that bilateral security agreements between Ukraine and its partners are crucial for achieving the strategic goal of NATO membership. "These agreements strengthen our position on the path to NATO, and this is noted in each one," he said.

Sybiha also recalled that a recent Foreign Ministry statement officially declared that any security guarantees that act as substitutes for NATO membership are unacceptable. However, these security agreements do not fall into that category.

Background:

  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement regarding the unacceptability of security guarantees that serve as substitutes for NATO membership on 3 December.
  • However, following the meeting, Andrii Sybiha stated that Ukraine is not pushing for NATO membership while at war.
