US plans to recruit more people to monitor compliance with sanctions

The United States government and independent legal experts are preparing to strengthen sanctions measures and export controls.

President Joe Biden's administration is focusing on these economic mechanisms to counter global adversaries such as Russia and China.

US law enforcement agencies are stepping up efforts to monitor compliance with sanctions in the commercial sector. The U.S. Department of Justice intends to recruit about 25 prosecutors to its National Security Division, whose main responsibilities will be to monitor sanctions and violations of U.S. export controls.

In addition, it is appointing a chief counsel to handle complex national security cases involving corporations, and is increasing funding for a unit that handles criminal cases related to sanctions in the banking sector.

Last month, British-American Tobacco agreed to pay a $635 million fine for conspiring to violate US sanctions against the DPRK.

The US foreign policy strategy increasingly includes sanctions and export controls, imposing general restrictions against Russia in response to its aggression in Ukraine, as well as increasing technology exports to China amid growing tensions with Beijing.

The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control fined companies a total of about $43 million in 2022, double the amount in 2021. These measures demonstrate the government's strategic approach, which includes the active use of economic levers to ensure its national interests at the global level.
