Details: Tsai Ing-wen stressed that "they [the United States] should do whatever they can to help the Ukrainians," Tsai said at the forum. "We [Taiwan] still have time," she added.
"A Ukrainian victory will serve as the most effective deterrent to future aggression," the former president of Taiwan is convinced, meaning that US military support for Kyiv will help deter China from attacking Taiwan.
China considers Taiwan to be its own territory, and there are fears that it would use force to seize control of the island. Despite the lack of formal diplomatic recognition, the United States remains Taiwan's most major global supporter and armaments supplier.
Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, recently revealed that help to Ukraine and Israel was straining the US military's ability to prepare for a potential Asian conflict.
Background:
- Europe issued a final appeal to the Biden administration to strengthen US support for Ukraine in order to bolster Kyiv's position ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration in January.
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine had not received even half of the weapons officially allocated by the United States and that Europe has helped Ukraine just as much as the US.
