Stoltenberg: Ukraine's accession to NATO to be discussed today by NATO Foreign Ministers

NATO foreign ministers will discuss further steps towards Ukraine's accession to the alliance.

This was announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg before the meeting.

According to him, in recent months, NATO members and partners have provided Ukraine with an unprecedented level of support for the return and liberation of Ukrainian territory. Now it is time to talk about Ukraine's accession to the Alliance.

"We will discuss Ukraine's aspirations for membership, and all Allies agree that NATO's door is open to new members. All Allies agree that Ukraine will join the Alliance, and that it is up to NATO countries and Ukraine to decide when Ukraine will become a member. Moscow has no veto power against NATO enlargement. But most importantly, all Allies agree that the most important task now is to ensure that Ukraine succeeds as a sovereign independent state," Stoltenberg said.

The NATO Secretary General emphasized that "Putin and Russia must not win this war".

"We must make sure that Ukraine wins this war. And when the war is over, we have to ensure that history does not repeat itself, that this pattern of Russian aggression against Ukraine really stops, and therefore we have to provide security guarantees for Ukraine after the war is over," Stoltenberg said.

The NATO Secretary General added that during the informal meeting, NATO foreign ministers will discuss issues and important new decisions to be taken at the Vilnius Summit in July.
