Boom barriers initially placed near the Crimean Bridge in the temporarily occupied city of Kerch, Crimea, to protect it from marine drone attacks have been washed ashore by the current current.

Details: A local correspondent from Crimea.Realities reported that remnants of the boom barriers – empty tanks embedded in reinforced frames – have piled up along the city’s promenade.

Russia has been attempting to prevent attacks from maritim drones to protect the bridge constructed over the Kerch Strait. In summer 2024, barges were stationed on the southern side of the bridge, followed by floating boom barriers positioned parallel to the bridge structure.

New satellite images show a considerable increase in the number of barges securing the bridge.

Background

  • In late June, reports emerged that the Russians had established a second line of boom barriers near the Kerch Bridge, consisting of 21 barges. Additionally, piers were reportedly installed near the foundation of the bridge.
  • By September, it became known that metal fences were also being placed near the Crimean Bridge in occupied Crimea to shield the bridge’s concrete pillars from underwater and surface drone attacks.
  • Previously, Russian media reported that fighter jets guard the Crimean Bridge from the air, while divers and trained dolphins protect it underwater.
