For the first time, the United States will transfer confiscated Russian funds to rebuild Ukraine
U.S. Attorney General approves transfer of confiscated funds from Russian oligarch to Ukraine
WASHINGTON, (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Wednesday approved the first transfer of confiscated Russian assets to Ukraine.
Last year, the U.S. Justice Department charged Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev with violating sanctions imposed on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, alleging that he provided funding to Russians who promoted separatism in Crimea.
At the time, Garland said that he also announced "the confiscation of millions of dollars from an account in a U.S. financial institution owned by Malofeev for violating sanctions."
In February, Garland said he had approved the transfer of these funds to Ukraine.
"This is the first transfer of confiscated Russian funds for Ukraine's reconstruction from the United States," Garland said, "but it will not be the last," he said in a statement.
