Turkish Parliament Refuses to Speed Up Consideration of Sweden's Application to NATO

The Turkish Parliament will not speed up consideration of Sweden's application to join the North Atlantic Alliance.

This was stated by the chairman of the Turkish parliamentary committee on foreign affairs Fuat Oktay - Reuters.

According to him, Sweden's accession to NATO is only one of the international agreements that Turkey plans to ratify.

"We will discuss it when the time comes... within the framework of our own priorities... What is urgent for others is not necessarily urgent for us", Oktay added.

It is worth noting that the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Parliament must approve Sweden's application for NATO membership. After that, it will be put to a vote in the parliament. If the MPs support the initiative, the final step for ratification will be the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
