Kilauea volcano erupts in Hawaii
Hawaii's Kilauea volcano began erupting on Wednesday morning, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported.
"At about 4: 44 am Pacific time on June 7, 2023, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (USGS) detected a glow in web camera images atop Kilauea, indicating that an eruption had begun in the Halemaʻumaʻu crater in the Kilauea caldera, within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park," the observatory said in a statement.
"The initial phases of eruptions are dynamic. Webcam images show cracks at the base of Halemaʻumaʻu crater generating lava flows on the surface of the crater floor. The activity is limited to Halemaʻumaʻu and the hazard will be reassessed as the eruption progresses," HVO said in a statement. The observatory said it is in "constant communication 'with park officials.
"At this time, there is no indication that populated areas are under threat", the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said in a post on Twitter
