Details: The minister commented on Russia’s latest combined attack on Ukraine.
Quote: "Air-raid warnings and emergency power outages across Ukraine, 4.5 million people without electricity. Every missile Putin launches is also targeting our European security. We all need to invest even more in our peace. Our additional air defence systems are a first step."
Background:
- Ukraine is set to receive two short- and medium-range IRIS-T air defence systems from Germany by the end of 2024.
- In early September, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that Germany had ordered a total of 17 IRIS-T air defence systems for Ukraine. This includes eight medium-range (SLM) systems and nine short-range (SLS) systems.
- As of early October, four SLM systems and three SLS systems were already in Ukraine. Subsequently, the German defence ministry reported the delivery of two more SLM and SLS systems, with Scholz promising to send an additional IRIS-T system to Ukraine by the end of the year in his conversation with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
